The Icon Series 1.
Cause related marketing, a humanitarian project.
The Icon Series was conceived, produced and photographed by Blain Crellin to mark Australia's 100 years of Federation 1901-2001.
The reason for the series is based on a personal observation - it takes only a few steps - to end up on the street with nothing, and lost.
The exhibition idea stemmed from a Saachi and Saachi group art exhibition to raise awareness and funds for a charitable cause.
As an individual artist, and with much encouragement from John Dalziel (the then marketing director for Salvos), we together agreed it was a unique way of raising funds for the 2001 Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal. It took 12 months to complete.
Blain approached all the ICONS, and personally raised over $80,000 in support/sponsorship.
Proceeds of the exhibition went towards a housing project to assist disadvantaged people in St.Kilda (an inner city bayside suburb of Melbourne). There was much media attention in radio, print and television and was seen as a successful strategy and outcome.
An auction/exhibition, including one of the first online bidding platforms was held at 101 Collins Street in Melbourne.
There were 26 portraits of Australian Icons, one of one photographs, sized at 100cm X 100cm Lambda digital prints.
